Phenylethylamine (2-phenylethylamine, phenethylamine, PhCH2CH2NH2) - an organic compound, an amine with a strong biological effect, an alkaloid. In the human brain, it is presumed that can act as a neurotransmitter. Phenylethylamine is a natural compound biosynthesized from the amino acid phenylalanine by enzymatic decarboxylation. It is also found in many foods, particularly chocolate. It has been suggested that phenethylamine from food may have psychoactive effects in sufficient quantity. But after getting to the gastrointestinal tract is rapidly metabolized by the enzyme MAO-B, which makes it impossible to reach in large quantities to the brain.
