GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid) is a compound that is naturally found in our body. It is produced as a result of the decarboxylation of glutamic acid. Due to its chemical structure, it belongs to the group of amino acids. Due to its functions, it is classified as inhibitory neurotransmitters. In the central nervous system, GABA is a factor blocking excessive nerve impulses. The nervous system is affected by binding to the GABAA, GABAB and GABAC receptors. The most well-known are the first of these, which occur in almost every nerve cell. Gamma-Aminobutyric acid therefore has both peripheral and central effects. Binding to specific receptors causes effects similar to some antidepressants. However, this effect is subtle and much more safe because GABA has limited ability to penetrate the brain. GABA is one of the most important factors regulating the natural, physiological circadian rhythm of sleep and activity. It also has the ability to influence the secretion of endogenous hormones, in particular the GH growth hormone.
